Our program is staffed by dedicated, men and women who have a common goal – to do what is best for student athletes – and are always looking for ways to achieve that goal. We can be proud of what we have achieved at Saint Francis School and this year, as in the past, the coaches and staff will concentrate on the processes that spur continuing advancement: evaluating what we have, determining what we can do to improve, and identifying what we need to make those improvements.
May God bless you throughout this year and let this handbook be your guide in successfully meeting your goals in athletics.
Sincerely,
Sister Joan of Arc Souza
Head of School

THE SAINTS GOALS AND PHILOSOPHY OF ATHLETICS
In general, we believe an athletic department should strive to offer its student athletes quality coaching and facilities to enable them to participate in a wide range of individual and team sports. Budget and facility constraints set practical limits on what can be provided, yet we would strive, nevertheless, toward this high objective. We believe that the athletic program at Saint Francis School is an integral part of the total educational process, and its goal is to develop the students’ potential and provide a discipline program that will benefit their skill training, attitude, commitment to the team concept and respect for rules and authority.
In the field of athletics, we are in the business of developing leaders, people who some day will be in community leadership positions. To make certain we develop strong character in these future leaders, we must give them an opportunity to perform in highly competitive environments, both educationally and athletically.
STUDENT ATHLETE GOALS
You have chosen to be a student athlete. As a student athlete, you should strive to be the best you can be both physically and mentally. This takes a full understanding of the enthusiasm of Saint Francis himself. Saint Francis was a very unselfish person and lived these three Ds to its full meaning: Devotion, Determination, and Discipline
DEVOTION –Be a loyal student athlete, one who knows what needs to be done to benefit the total team first and yourself second.
DETERMINATION – In striving for excellence you must understand that it takes hard work and personal sacrifice to get the job done.
DISCIPLINE – The most single important thing in your life is control. When things go wrong, and they will, and you are not a disciplined individual, you will fall apart and lose sight of your goals, not only as an athlete but also as an individual. As a student athlete, you must be a strong person physically and mentally and strive to develop a high level of tolerance.
There is a thin line between mediocrity and greatness and that thin line is the big difference. Before a team can set goals, you as an individual must set your own personal goals. First, set your goals in life; second, take little steps to achieve them.
Like our athletic program, you must set four goal categories which are applicable to you.
They are:
- Immediate
- Intermediate
- Long-Range
- Ultimate
The Ultimate Goal could be the dream, which will maintain your personal drive to overachieve. The Long-Range goal might be the desired success for the season. The Intermediate Goal can be to improve yourself each time you go out to a GAME. The Immediate Goal, in all probability, will be each day’s preparation for the upcoming game. In keeping with this thought you must ask yourself the following questions: Am I doing the right things? And am I doing it properly?
To help you better understand; keep in mind these five P’s:
Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance
After the goals are set, write out the plan for each category:
- Make the decision
- Set a deadline
- List the elements necessary to accomplish your goal (your teachers, coaches, counselors and/or athletic staff can help)
- Decide what you are willing to give in return for what you are going to receive
- Visualize the goal already completed, the goal results
- Believe and expect it to work and
- Faced with tough times, remember tough times never last, only tough people do.
As a Saint Francis Athlete, you have a responsibility first to your family, to your school, to your team and then yourself. You must work cooperatively as a member of a team going after a common goal.
THE SAINTS PROGRAM
Saint Francis, as a member of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH), competes against more than twenty other members of the ILH. Both individuals and teams compete for the coveted crown of a League and State Championship. Any question or concern should be addressed to the Athletic Director. ILH has strict rules regarding outside participation. Violation of these rules could affect eligibility; these rules are explained in detail in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu By-Laws.

Saint Francis School’s athletic facilities consist of a gymnasium (Dome), outside courts, a batting cage, and a softball field. Future development includes a locker, conditioning, and training rooms.
All student athletes are governed by the high school athletic code of this handbook, as well as by the general rules and policy in the parent/student handbook for all Saint Francis School students. All student athletes are voluntary participants and must accept the training rules, regulations, and responsibilities of the athletic department. The staff of the athletic department is available to answer any question students may have about programs offered, student eligibility, and awards given by the athletic department.
General Duties of all Student Athletic Trainers
1) The student athletic trainer’s first duty is to his/her academic studies. The students may be excused from training room duties to pursue academic responsibilities when personally excused by the supervising athletic trainer.
2) The student athletic trainer is expected to attend all team practices and games unless excused by the supervising athletic trainer.
3) The student athletic trainer is expected to arrive in the training room before practices and games to administer treatment to the athletes, prepare the necessary equipment, and tape the athletes. When practicing directly after school, the student athletic trainer is to arrive in the training room no later than 10 minutes after school is dismissed. When an athletic contest is not directly after school, the student athletic trainer is to be in the training room 1 hour before the beginning of the event, unless that time is changed by the supervising athletic trainer.
4) During practice, the student athletic trainer is to stand and watch practice. There should never be a group of students together socializing and not watching practice. The student at
