WEIGHT CLASSES TO WATCH
GIRLS
108 pounds — Kahuku’s Kalae Johnson is the top seed while Hawai’i Baptist’s Kaety Enos is the second seed. Fourth-seeded Marissa Hartleb of King Kekaulike could meet ILH runner-up Macy Yonamine of Kamehameha in the quarterfinals with the winner presumably taking on Johnson for a spot in the finals. Meanwhile, Enos could meet Roosevelt’s Marisa Fukunaga in an interesting quarterfinal matchup. Konawaena’s Danielle Hubbard is the third seed.
120 pounds — This could be the most anticipated girls’ weight of the tournament. Kalani junior Megan Yamaguchi was the top seed as last year’s state runner-up and this year’s OIA champion. Fourth-seeded Jodi Ozaki of Kealakehe is also on the top bracket while Punahou freshman Mindy Chow is the second seed and Baldwin’s Kayla Giannotto is the third seed. Giannotto could meet ‘Aiea’s Joy Yamashita — the OIA runner-up — in the quarterfinal round. If Yamashita gets through, a semifinal against Chow should prove exciting.
220 pounds — While one ‘Iolani senior (103-pounder Keiko Akamine) goes for her third straight state title, another Raider senior is hoping for a back-to-back titles at 220 pounds. Top-seeded Olivia Fatongia has wrestled for the state championship in each of her three seasons, losing her first two appearances to Kamehameha graduate Hoku Nohara. Fatongia, the ILH champion, is expected to defend her title, but may be tested early. Radford sophomore Brayanne Moe — who lost to Fatongia in last year’s state final — could meet her in the quarterfinal round. Hana’s Makamae Smith is the fourth seed while Kealakehe’s Pomai Barton is the third seed and OIA champion, Sanoe Spencer of Pearl City, is second.
BOYS
114 pounds — Last year’s state champion (Kamehameha’s Shayden Terukina) moved up two weight classes to
125, opening the door for any number of challengers. Lahainaluna’s Edison Hidalgo drew the top seed. Fourth-seeded Ryan Nakagawa of Kaiser could meet ‘Iolani senior Truong Vu in the quarterfinal round with the winner expected to wrestled Hidalgo for a spot in the final. Punahou’s Jordan Ng — who defeated Vu in the ILH final — is the No. 2 seed. Kealakehe’s Donnavan Soares is the third seed, but could meet Mid-Pacific’s David Terao in a preliminary round match.
125 pounds — With three defending state champs, this should be the most anticipated weight class of the tournament. Punahou senior Reid Oshiro, who won at 125 pounds last year, is the top seed and Lahainaluna’s George Chihara is the fourth seed. The bottom side of the bracket is loaded with talent. Third-seeded Jimmy Romualdo of Konawaena may have his hands full with Kamehameha’s Terukina in a possible quarterfinal matchup. Pearl City’s Bill Takeuchi (119 champion in 2008) is seeded second and could meet Maryknoll’s Brandon Oshiro in a preliminary round.
135 pounds — Kaiser’s Byron Apo drew the top seed and is in the top bracket with fourth-seeded Tai Johnson of Konawaena. Apo moved up from 130 pounds, where he lost in last year’s state final to Lahainaluna’s Travis Okano, a three-time state champion. Kamehameha’s Jacob Luning-Hoshino is the second seed while Lahainaluna’s David Arcangel is the third seed. Mililani senior Chad Diamond, who lost to Waiakea’s Ryan Higa in last year’s state final, could meet Arcangel in the quarterfinals.

Diverse paths led them to wrestling mat
by Stanley Lee
Advertiser Staff Writer
Four years ago, Robyn Teruya gave wrestling a shot at the suggestion of her football coach at Roosevelt.
Last season, Moanalua’s Rachael Ostovich took up another sport on the mat, joining the wrestling team after cheerleading season.
The seemingly circuitous route hasn’t kept both seniors from finding success. Both won their weight classes at Saturday’s O’ahu Interscholastic Association championships and are seeded in this week’s Chevron/Hawai’i High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Championships at the Neal Blaisdell Arena.
The qualifying round starts tomorrow at 10 a.m. Semifinals and the latter consolation rounds start on Saturday at 10 a.m. Girls championship and consolation final matches begin at 3 p.m., with the boys to follow.
