Boys Division I

Does St. Francis have boys? Are they going to have a basketball team? Are they entering the ILH Intermediate Division 1? The answer is YES. In this historic first year Mr. Sol Batoon took our team to great heights.
On Nov. 17, 2008 the pre-season started on a rainy & windy evening at Hanalani School. We came away with a run away victory. We were 3-1 in preseason losing only to Punahou.
We opened our ILH season by falling to Iolani on Dec. 3rd. We then went on a four game winning streak defeating Maryknoll, St. Louis, Damien & Mid-Pac. We ended the regular season by losing two overtime games at Kamehameha & Punahou. We ended the regular season with a 4-3 record putting us in the top half of the playoffs.
The New Year Fireworks began for us on Jan 2nd at St. Louis. We defeated previously undefeated Kamehameha 59-54 in double overtime. It was a most thrilling game from start to finish. We definitely had the gym rocking. This was by far our best game of the season. Unfortunately we lost our last two games by rather small margins. Our historic season ended with an 8-6 overall record.
Many of us remember the Fabulous Five of the University of Hawaii—well we had 5 eighth graders, who were our Fabulous Five. They played almost all the minutes. Kahanu Puulei our outstanding point guard, Austin Usua our outside shooter, Keoni-Ray Millare, our strong rebounder, Isaac Savaiinaea, our big center and point maker, and the quickness of Jon-Michael Sharsh. We had 7th graders Shawn Batiste & Egene Kim on the bench. We also had a group of 8, 7th graders who formed our team in the Division II. Mr. Batoon has given us a solid foundation for the J.V. team for next year and another strong Intermediate Team for next year. Mr. David Takaki guided our other Intermediate Team.
Also making history was our St. Francis Cheerleaders. Two seniors, Josette Villaro & Taylor Keala Pestano approached Mr. Michael Chu about forming a Cheerleading Squad. Mr. Chu served as the faculty advisor and Josette & Keala did all the coaching. We were in uniform at the Hanalani game and throughout the season. There was 1 freshmen, 5 eight graders and 1 seventh grader. Once again the future looks bright as the Squad will get larger and continue to follow the boys in the sports. The cheerleading squad will also work for the Girls teams in the future.

Boys D-I Basketball

BSo Close! So Close! In the season finale we fell to Punahou 54-51. We led 15-14 after the first quarter. We started with the first four points of the second quarter and then we ran into a road block as Punahou ran off 10 straight points. We trailed 31-26 at the half. We played Punahou about even and trailed 42-36 after three quarters. Once again Punahou went on a 6-0 run and led 48-36 and then we started our miracle comeback. We hustled and went for every loose ball and played like true champions. In the last minute of play we trailed only 52-51 and we got the ball back on a bad pass. We played for the last shot and worked the ball around and then on a pass to Isaac in the post Punahou stole the ball. The Punahou defender went over Isaac to get the ball and there was no call. As we tried to get the ball back Punahou got a basket as the buzzer sounded. Dina, Michelle, Rick, the cheerleaders, parents and family members witnessed a great game and an outstanding season. Who would have thought just a few months ago people were wondering about our Boys Basketball Team—-could we compete or would be just be participating(to say we just had a token team). We answered all the critics and came out with a great product. Coach Sol and Coach Spencer can be most proud of this achievement. 5-5 in league play and 8-6 overall—what a season. The foundation is solid. We have five outstanding young men leading the way for next year’s J.V. team. Isaac is the best big man on the intermediate level. He has displayed a soft jump shot and the ability to block shots. Kahanu is an outstanding ballandler and when given the opportunity will hit the three point shot. Austin continued to drive the baseline and put up great shots. He also shot well from the corner. The fastest on the team Jon-Michael continued to improve throughout the season and was always quick to the basket. Keoni was just a tremendous rebounder. He battled among the trees and came away with strong rebounds and scored with strong put backs. Also on the team were 7th graders Shawn Batiste, Egene Kim & Blayne Won. They will be ready to start and take leadership roles on the intermediate team and the boys from the B team will come up and so we could possibly have 10 eighth graders next year.
